What is Hatcha Yoga?

Hatha Yoga is one of the oldest and most widely practiced forms of yoga. Its name comes from the Sanskrit: Ha means "sun" and Tha means "moon," symbolizing the union of opposites, particularly between body and mind, active and passive energy. It is considered the basis of many other modern forms of yoga. Origins and Philosophy Hatha Yoga has its roots in India, dating back to ancient texts such as the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali (circa 2nd century BC) and the Hatha Yoga Pradipika (15th century). It aims to discipline the body to better prepare the mind for meditation and spiritual awakening. Unlike purely meditative forms of yoga, Hatha Yoga emphasizes physical work as a means of achieving inner harmony.


  • Principles and Practices Hatha Yoga is based on three fundamental pillars: Asanas (physical postures): These strengthen the body, improve flexibility, and develop body awareness. Among the best known are the downward dog pose (Adho Mukha Svanasana), the warrior pose (Virabhadrasana), and the lotus pose (Padmasana). Pranayama (breath control): Breathing plays a key role in regulating vital energy (prana). Exercises such as alternate nostril breathing (Nadi Shodhana) or the breath of fire (Kapalabhati) help purify the body and calm the mind. Meditation and Relaxation: Often practiced at the end of a session, these allow you to integrate the benefits of the postures and breathing, promoting deep relaxation and a state of mindfulness.
